Fourth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski defeated Juan Sebastian Cabal and Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 7-6(5) in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday.

The Poles, who lifted the trophy at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event when it was played on indoor hard-courts in 2008, won 79 per cent of their service points, firing 12 aces in the 78-minute contest.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski are coming off their first season title at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (d. Granollers/Lopez) and are through to their sixth quarter-final of the year.

Seventh-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna also reached the final eight with a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory over Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas. The Dubai champions won 30 of their 33 first serve points to advance in 64 minutes.

In first-round action, last week’s Estoril Open titlists Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer kept their momentum going, beating wild cards Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Ivan Navarro 6-3, 7-5 in 80 minutes.

Qureshi and Rojer did not drop serve, saving all three break points they faced to set a second-round clash with top seeds and defending champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.

Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils teamed up to defeat wild cards Sergei Bubka and Javier Marti 7-6(6), 6-2. Gasquet and Monfils will clash with No. 5 seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek next.
