How to Choose a Tennis Racket
There are a myriad of racquet choices in the market today and choosing a racquet can be a daunting task. Below are the three main performance characteristics we feel are most important for you to consider when selecting a racquet.
HEAD SIZE
Racquets can be categorized into four different sizes as follows:
-
Midsize: (85-92 sq. inches)
-
Midplus: (93-105 sq. inches)
-
Oversize: (106-115 sq. inches)
-
Super Oversize: (116+ sq. inches)
Power and control are directly related to the overall head size of the racquet. A larger head means more power and is usually preferred by beginning and intermediate players. A larger head racquet offers a larger sweetspot and greater forgiveness on off-center hits. A smaller head is ideal for more advanced players who generates plenty of power but desire more control on their shots.
GRIP SIZE
Playing with the wrong grip size can be detrimental to your game and your arm.
Prolonged use of a grip that is too big or too small can result in tennis elbow.
Using a grip that is too small requires too much tension to hold onto the
racquet and prevent it from twisting in your hand. A grip that is too big
prevents proper wrist snap on serves and requires more muscle strength to hold
on to the racquet.
STRING PATTERN
The size of the holes formed by the main and cross strings is referred to as
string pattern density. The bigger the hole the more "open" the string pattern.
The smaller the hole the more "dense" the string pattern. Players seeking more
spin and/or power will benefit from a more open string pattern. Players who
don’t hit with much spin and are seeking enhanced control will generally prefer
racquets with denser string patterns. A denser string pattern is typically
preferred by hard-hitting topspin players seeking increased string durability.
Q: How do I tell what size the
racquet is?
A: The size of the racquet is typically noted
on the inside of the neck between the handle and racquet head.
This will tell you the total square inch size of the head.
Q: How do I determine the proper grip size
for me?
A: There are two simple ways to measure your hand for the
proper grip size. To determine the right grip size using a racquet, grip the
racquet in with your hitting hand with your palm placed against the same
bevel as the string face. Now place the index finger of your non-hitting
hand in the space between your fingertips and palm. If your finger just fits
in the space you have the correct grip size. If there is not enough room for
your finger the grip is too small. If there is space between your palm and
finger then the grip is too big. You can also measure your grip size using a
ruler. With your hitting hand open, palm facing you and fingers extended
together, measure from the tip of your ring finger down to the bottom
lateral crease in your palm.
Q: Is there anything I can do to prevent
tennis elbow?
A: The two primary causes of tennis elbow are improper grip
size and string tension. Make sure you have the right grip size and your
racquets are not strung too tightly.
